I had my first student when I was in middle school (around 1993). Jumping forward a few years later, I started teaching again around 1998 while attending Bekrlee College of Music. At that time I was only teaching partime but quickly escalated to fulltime once I graduated in 2001. At my peak, I was teaching between 40-45 students weekly. For beginning students i usually start with Hal Leonard's music books to get the fundamentals of music theory down. I also like to integrate learning styles of music and songs that my students want to learn from artists or bands they may like. I find that the best way to ensure a strong connection to the process of leaning is making it fun and creating a game plan for learning based on the individual. Read More

My methods really depend on the level of the student. For beginners, I tend to stick to basics by teaching them chords, scales, and basic music theory; by using music that they would like to learn how to play. To aid with the learning of basic music theory, I might have the students learn some older music, just as a chance to analyze it, but nothing more than that unless of course they would like to.
