For beginning students, I typically like to start with one of the Andersen etude books. This helps the student really get a grasp for the technicality and fundamentals of their instrument. This will also help them to progress in their musical playing abilities with their solo pieces. I like to start every lesson with scales or etudes and then work on their solo piece afterwards. As I said earlier I tend to use the Rubank and Essential Element books in lessons. I start with seeing what the students goals are and making a goal sheet. For instance if a student is interested in Musicals. We will start with our basic warm up and techniques but on top of that I would assign an excerpt from a musical that correlates with the current lesson. I heavily focus on tone and fundamentals, so applying it to the music comes seamlessly. For tone, I like both Phillip Bernold books, on embouchure and sound. Sonorite by Moyse as well.
