I like to teach with music, meaning we start by choosing the students favorite song and building slowly in level of difficulty. As they progress we play beats and learn fills. Later we get into reading and writing drum notes. Then we explore different genres, and styles of playing. I love teaching students privately one on one. My youngest student was 4; a Piano student. She was from a Russian family and didn’t speak a word of English. Teaching her was a joint effort between myself and the girl’s mother who did speak English; a very interesting experience. My oldest student was 86; a Guitar student. He had studied previously with another instructor and loved to play. Not everyone will become a professional musician, but I do believe, everyone's life can deeply enriched with increased musical comprehension. I served as Band Leader (lead musician) at Destiny Metropolitan Worship Church, a 6,000 member congregation, in Atlanta for 6 years. My duties during that time included leading, teaching, and shepherding a 7 piece band through baptism, communion, regular services, funerals, weddings, early morning prayer, weekly rehearsals, special rehearsals, etc. My duties during the holiday season(s) inclusive of Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter also included providing musical accompaniment for plays, special selections, and more.
