Standard pieces of a drum kit include the high hat, crash, ride cymbal, and drum sticks. If a student is at the very beginning stages of their learning, they can also start with basic drum practice pad. Other drums taught are the snare, bongos, conga, or djembe.

Drum lessons for children should start at around age 7 or 8. Starting younger than this is generally not recommended, as the drums are a very physical isntrument requiring extensive use of the arms and hands. A child should achieve a certain dexterity before beginning to learn the drums. Also, a child should be able to reach the pedals of a standard drum kit if they are going to be learning rock drumming.
