I recorded the Flight of the Bumble Bee for the first time at age 14 and became a symphonic percussionist later with the National Art Center Orchestra of Canada as well as for the Ottawa Symphony while playing for the Starlighters and Savoy Swing Band at the Penguin cafe in Ottawa. I like to base my teaching pedagogy purely around the child, the family, and their learning skills. Everybody is different and it's my job to explore all avenues that the student wants to accomplish in their musical experience. For beginning students, I start with the Drummers Complete Vocabulary, which establishes good technique. Simultaneously, based on the students interests, I pick two styles that the student would like to begin working on. Once they've learnt a specific rudiment, I show them how to use that in everyday performance and get creative with it by applying that in beats, fills etc. If the student has a specific song or style that they want to learn, I help them break it down into simple parts so that they can understand and perfect it really easily. As I structure my curriculum for each student, I like to incorporate things like active listening and history into lessons so that it's never just going through the motions and doing monotonous exercises.
