My teaching style is to identify what area a student needs help in and to remediate the problem by creating supplemental materials. Showing students what to practice and how to practice are key elements. My methods are geared to improve tone production, articulation, phrasing and musicality. I strongly recommend that students select classical music to practice. I heavily emphasize the playing of scales and arpeggios. It's very important to me that the student progresses at their own pace while still being presented with new challenges along the way. I believe in a well-rounded music education, by teaching music theory and ear training from the very beginning along with private instruction, supplemented by listening/analyzing music, ensemble playing, performance opportunities, and using the best of new music technology software to increase one's overall musicianship. Since I have such limited teaching experience, it is impossible to define my teaching style. I do love the instrument. It enabled me to get into the Air Force Band and legally avoid serving in combat during wartime. It has also been a source of pleasure for decades. I look forward to seeing my joy in playing the instrument reflected in my students. My tip on keeping students inspired is to give them the responsibility for their music. I show them how to make their instrument sound as good as possible as early as possible.
