Next, I start teaching chords by starting with E minor and then moving as little as possible with the fingers so the student can understand the relation between certain chords. My goal, whether a student purse a career in music or not, is to aid development becoming not simply an instrumentalist, but a musician. Most humans are taught to recognize colors, why not sounds? I encourage improvisation, composition and study of the masters, but my priority is that it all be fun: I wouldn't hold myself to drudgery and certainly wouldn't expect that of a student. Therefore, I spend the early lessons getting to know the student and designing the layout for our lessons moving forward. There are definitely certain books that I have used to assist with teaching. I began teaching private and group public school lessons in my later high school years; from there I decided that a career in teaching and performance was my calling. During college, I continued teaching private lessons and received the opportunity to teach general music for half a year in a K-8 public school. One of the highlights from my time there was leading a group of 8th graders in forming their own contemporary classical ensemble, composing their own music, going to a professional studio and recording themselves, planning and scheduling a concert, and performing their original music live in front of their peers.
