I use a combination of sight singing, ear training, and standard theory. While there are many proven methods, every student is different. Learning abilities, comprehensive understanding, and prior knowledge can play a part in the methods that are used. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. This is both a collaborative and individualized process. As an instructor, following the needs of each student is the key to finding an approach best suited for them. When I meet a student, I take notes on what kind of music they like, what their goals are, and why they feel like voice lessons are the best way for them to achieve that goal. From there I take the pace at whatever the student is comfortable with occasionally pushing it a little bit if progress seems to be too slow. I have experience in music performance, music therapy, and music education. I have performed for many hospice patients, individuals in the aging population, people of many ranges of disabilities, different churches over the east coast, theaters across Maryland, and children of many backgrounds and ages. Originally being a self-taught musician, I began with piano and harmonica, then eventually branched out to guitar, bass, banjo, among several others. I have ran sound equipment from an early age as well, learning how to set rigs for full bands and how to mix and master tracks for recording purposes. I have met and played with many famous and unfamous musicians, and find that the highest amount of talent is undiscovered and uncultivated. Read More
