(although I'm happy to do so) For me the more important and rewarding factor is assisting in growing a flame of a passion, love understanding of music performance into a wild fire! My pedagogy is based on the American jazz tradition and the teachings of Orff and Kodaly. I like to impart a holistic love of music in my students, without boring them with too much history or theory. However, it is my belief that theory and musical literacy will open doors to a greater level of fulfillment and understanding of music as a whole. For beginner students, I typically start with rote lessons that teach the basics of the instruments. Then, I move into performing basic, pedagogically-appropriate scales, and begin curriculum in the Rubank Elementary Method books. For more advanced students, I usually have them start with the intermediate or advanced method books, and we learn more advanced major and minor scales, followed by arpeggios and chords (if on piano.) As far as my style of teaching, I would use the book, Accent on Achievement as I mentioned earlier as a base. Practicing every day for at least 30 minutes is a must not only from the book but by just playing long tones, playing major scales which I will also go over and possibly some songs to keep the student interested in his instrument. Also try to understand what type of style the student is leaning on whether it be Jazz, blues, classical or pop and we can try to develop the student to fit that style. Read More
