For beginning students I teach my students using the Arban methods book. I do this to build consistency with slide positions. I also use my tuner and metronome to make sure students are playing in time and in tune.With out this stuff bad habits can happen from the start. I make sure that the student has a grip on the material without ever making them feel like the material is a little too hard for them to understand. When they are laughing, they are learning and what better way to learn than to have fun with it? I incorporate dancing, poetry and all other art forms to teach and the students gravitate to that and use what they learn in our lesson to write their own music and go off to have fun doing so.
