Chris was a member of UNT's A Capella Choir, ranked among the top five undergraduate choirs in the nation. He has worked with numerous acclaimed performers and voice teachers including Laurel Miller, Lella Cuberli, Richard Croft, Dr. Stephen Morscheck and Dr. Stephen Austin. My goal for the initial meeting with a student is to know what their joy and passion is with music. What is their creative spark? Why do they want to learn to play piano? I then evaluate their listening skills, rhythm skills, hand and eye coordination, motor abilities, and improvisational skills. I take the student at his/her own pace. I try to be sensitive to the needs of the student not just his/her musical needs but his/her academic needs as my ability to continue working with the student depends upon his/her academic success. I will suggest a basic routine at home: Housework, Practice, Study, Leisure, Bedtime. Both for Practice and Study I recommend organizing subject matter in order of least favorite to favorite which gets the least favorite out of the way and saves the best for last. Read More

During the initial lesson I sit down with my students and discuss exactly what they are looking to glean from private instruction.  Then we develop a game plan.  Some students achieve at a faster pace than others because talent develops differently from everyone.  I also ensure that every student has strong music theory foundation so that they understand singing isn't just what you hear but what you know in your mind. I have developed a personal commitment to helping my students succeed. I began teaching music lessons in public schools during my college years. At my professor's request, I taught college music students who were not music majors, and was also substitute teacher for a music class of my peers at the university.
