I like to learn who my student is before starting anything. I want to know what their interests are and what their view on music is. I then take that and bond with them and teach them in a certain way that matches their thoughts and personalities the best. I like to have fun and not be too strict as long as the student is doing their work, but if they are not staying on track the fun is replaced with more focus on concepts to be sure they are learning what is needed. Many students give up simply because they don't know how to practice, but I hope to show them how easy it is to enjoy your practicing. I love to watch my students become better versions of themselves through the medium of music. I never want my students to be satisfied with reaching a destination on their goal charts. I want my students to become so infatuated with the journey, that they will seek to continue to look for new experiences to explore. I create this environment by keeping lessons diverse and dynamic. I make each student compile a list of goals for themselves, 3 big goals, 5 goals the lead to each of the 3 big goals, 10 goals to lead to each of the 5 goals, and finally, daily goals that will help us accomplish the 10 goals. Older children just beginning to enter the world of music will begin with the fundamentals of musicianship, sound, and breathing. From there I will progress to rhythm, pitch, and notation. When these skills are mastered I will get the students comfortable with their instruments and begin playing. Students that have a background in music with their instruments will be assessed to determine the level of teaching required.
