Instruments: Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium

I have been teaching in the private setting since the mid-90s, which I began as an undergrad in Music Education. I taught for about a decade in public schools in Kansas, teaching both band and vocal music to students of all ages at various times. I chose to return to school in 2009 and completed two Masters degrees in performance in classical and jazz trumpet over the next four years. Currently, I teach trumpet and jazz improvisation at Southern Nazarene University, Southwestern Christian University, and Rose State College. I also teach jazz band at SNU. As I mentioned above, I focus a great deal on fundamentals, which, once mastered, helps the student master new materials more easily.

Throughout my music teaching career, I have enjoyed watching students progress on their instruments in both proficiency and their love of playing.  I enjoy watching their weekly improvement on both the solo and ensemble level and encourage them to perform often in a variety of settings to build their confidence in public performance whether that be as members of school bands and ensembles or in public recitals showcasing their progress to both parents and friends

For beginning younger students I begin by working a very short time with parents to assure them their children are in a positive learning environment. Parents of small children are encouraged to attend each lesson with their child. The core principles of musicality, breathing, and perspective are taught. The next step is sound and movement. When these skills are mastered I help students get comfortable with their instruments and then begin playing. Older children just beginning to enter the world of music will begin with the fundamentals of musicianship, sound, and breathing. From there I will progress to rhythm, pitch, and notation. When these skills are mastered I will get the students comfortable with their instruments and begin playing. Students that have a background in music with their instruments will be assessed to determine the level of teaching required. After their skills have been assessed each student will have a plan of action with specific goals to met their target competency. During alls lessons for all age groups I emphasize practice requirements and time management.
