There is no one method that fits every student. My methods involve a preliminary assessment of each students individual needs, goals and current level to determine the appropriate path we should embark on. While I do use various piano methods, such as Piano Adventures and Alfred's Basic Piano Course to guide beginning students along, I try to ensure that the course work is a side note to the primary musical goal of our weekly lesson, as well as the weekly homework. When working with younger students, my approach is twofold. First, I like to work with Alfred's Basic Series to establish a solid goundwork for reading music and mastering technique. Second, I like to cater the lessons to the student's particular interest, whether preparing solo pieces, practicing theory through ear training and sight reading, or writing compositions. My wonderful mother started me in piano lessons when I was 5 years old. She never dreamed that I would go on to get a degree in music during those first years of lessons. I studied piano under Dr. John Cobb, who holds a Doctorate in Piano Performance from Julliard. I continued piano lessons for 13 years, but when I started college, I decided to major in trumpet. I place an emphasis on many aspects I have learned in Alexander Technique training, and I can help students learn natural, efficient, and effective ways to move to produce their desired sound. Younger students can learn healthy mind-body habits of playing and practice before any less healthy habits set in, and older students can address things about their own playing that they dislike or does not serve them well. I strive to explain or demonstrate musical concepts, techniques, and feelings, and I encourage students to share their own experience so that we may find a common ground in communication. Read More

 Drawing upon my education and experiences as both performer and teacher, I strive to relate my musical background to my students' learning experiences and progress. As each student comes with his or her individual musical wants and interests, student lessons are designed to meet these needs of a particular student. I have young students of ages 5 to 14 as well as students of upper ages. According to a student's level of musicianship (beginner, advanced or in between), students are taught how to read music, music theory in relation to their progress, chords, scales and how to write/compose their own songs.
