For me, it is easier for me to hear a rhythm or melody while looking at it. It is easier for me to grasp and understand the rhythm and melody in terms of the context of the piece. Same with my teaching. I will always demonstrate a scale or rhythm or chord for a student before having the student attempt it by themselves. After we work through the example together, I will have them try playing it alone and if a particular area needs to be fixed I will address it, make sure the student understands, and move on from there. If I notice a student has a peculiar method of approaching the fundamentals, but it isn't leading the down a bad path, I will help facilitate their unique approach while guiding them toward mastery of the concept. I feel the single most important thing about teaching music is to nurture the love of music that will sustain the student through the intermittent struggles with learning, rather than try to force a student down a "traditional" path. Nicholas is a twenty-five year old tenor from North Carolina. He is a recent graduate of East Carolina University, where he completed dual Masters of Music degrees in Vocal Performance/Pedagogy and Choral Conducting, respectively. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Performance from High Point University. Nicholas has garnered recognition at the Mid-Atlantic Regional level of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition and was a qualifier for the 2017 National Competition. Read More
