Lessons are broken up into two parts: Technique and repertoire. It's important to build up proper technique to prevent injury and to refine skill. I like students to work on three pieces at a time (It sounds scary, but is totally manageable.) If I feel the student can handle more music, I will adjust. During my time there, I also self-recorded and produced my first three full length albums as well as Elizabeth Boaz's album "Forgiving the Rain." As a trumpet player, I was a member of the Seattle Chinese Orchestra for three years and the Seattle-based band Dismal Thinkings. Following graduation, I moved to Petaluma to quarantine, teach music lessons, and work on musical projects with my duo Honey Disposition. My philosophy for quality music education has three main parts: appreciation, practice, literacy. I braid all three of these parts into each lesson, with a student focused approach. When it comes to beginning band students, I will typically use the Standards of Excellence book. But, depending on the students and their abilities, I will try Essential Elements, as well. For piano students, I will use Bastien Piano Basics, Fabor Piano Adventures or Alfred's Basic Piano, depending on the age group. After the students start to understand the foundation and fundamentals of their instrument, then I will find a piece of music for them to learn as a soloist. Read More
