Since I've observed that most younger students tend to not know what style they like, I typically place them on Alfreds lesson books. For some reason, it seems to me that students "wake up" to a much wider range of genres at age 11 I prefer to accommodate their stylistic preferences to make lessons more fun for them. For teenagers adults, I encourage them to tell me what their favorite songs styles are so that we can focus on what gives them the most gratification, thus making their lessons more enjoyable. I am fairly new to teaching, but have taught 1-4 grade general music, 5-6 grade choir, and am currently a high school choir director. I have performed in many choral settings including professional choirs with full orchestras. I have made debuts in operas. I like to keep the learning simple and basic for the beginning students(children adult), so I typically start with excerpts from the Robert Pace series or John Thompsons piano books from The Willis Music Company. That way I can assess the student to see if they can understand music auditorily, visually and kinesthetically. For my mid to advance students, I access them through customized questions a series of strategic musical exercises to find out what the students are interested in, and assist them in their goals on the level that they can understand.
