For the exercises the student has mastered, I will assign the next exercise in the series or assign and go over a new exercise that strengthens whatever skill we are working on. I teach classical technique that can be applied to any type or genreof music. I usually start with standard singing and breathing techniques. Then I will listen to a student's voice and determine their range and pick out a solo song based on their range, ability level, and the preferences of the student. I approach teaching in layers. Step one leads to step two, we cant skip steps! I find it important that for beginners we follow this structure. More advanced students will be on a case by case basis in regards to where we start. I emphasize imprivisation in every lesson weather it be on drums, piano or trombone. I focus heavily on making sure my student is truly comfortable and feels safe in their lessons, and in my experience, this is critical to ensure progress and good technique. I take notes during lessons to ensure that goals are set and achieved, and I spend at least two hours a week just brainstorming repertoire and technical exercises for my students based on their needs. My voice students know that their voices is the only instrument that cannot be bought and replaced, and for that reason, we all need to take good care of it and educate it so it lasts forever.
