ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BA, California State University Chico, Music

Awards:

The National Society of Leadership and Success- Honor Society Member

National Band Association- College Music Society Member

Overview:
I am a Los Angeles-born and Chico-grown educator, who completed my Bachelor's degree in music at California State University, Chico. I have an extensive background in music, with over a decade of experience as a performer and teacher. In addition to these musical qualifications, I have also gained experience in the behavioral health field as a personal mentor, aid, caregiver and teacher/ aid trainer which supplement courses that I completed in the health and wellness field. I also possesses a more technical background in the field of physiological sciences, having completed two year's worth of courses in anatomy and physiology.
EXPERIENCE
I am a music education and performance professional with considerable experience and knowledge in teaching music to students with a diverse range of learning styles. I have taught music extensively to students with backgrounds in education and performance. I have provided instruction for music ensembles while focusing on the overall group sound, as well as for individuals while concentrating on their specific areas for improvements. I have experience planning, preparing and implementing lesson plans throughout the academic year while tracking the progress of students. I have taught music to a wide range of age groups and instruments throughout my career. This has included teaching how to write musical notation for instruments and voice. I have also taught the numerical elements of music such as rhythm and tempo.
METHODS USED
My background in teaching music has involved students with a wide range of very specific needs. This has helped me refine my skills as a one-on-one instructor, by learning that each student adapts and reacts in different ways. By identifying what these needs are and by developing specialized instruction plans that are tailored to provide them with the tools they need, I have helped students reach their goals succeed on numerous levels. Overall, I enjoy teaching music to people who are musicians just as much as to those who don’t consider themselves to be musicians. Part of this enjoyment comes from my belief that everyone is a musician.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style revolves heavily around what is happening with the mind and body while a student is learning. When teaching in a manner involving a “do, hear, see” process, for example, one can make the note, hear the note and then see how that note is noted. In order to give sounds, pitches and rhythmic cadences a unique personality to enhance simple placement in time and space, musicians must also learn how to utilize and strengthen their own emotional, interpersonal and physical (moving, feeling, controlled breathing) abilities. Music should not be merely stoic, mechanical, repetitive rudiments, paradiddles or scales. These important elements when paired with the mind and heart deliver the extraordinary essence of whomever or whatever is creating it. That expression is music. Music is one of the most unique representation of who we are. It can, but does not have to, represent all that we are. There was undoubtedly more to Mozart then what we perceive in the many works he composed. Each and every one of his notes however, voiced the essence of Mozart's unique cognition and personal emotions. Which brings to consideration the ability to understand or to be "in tune" with another person's music. How amazing is the event of two (or many, many more) independent musical voices finding a way to exist and merge into one at the exact same time and place? This is perfect harmony. In what I have seen of the world so far, we often can achieve this deep intimacy with each other more easily in music then anything else, regardless of any other association two or more people may have with one another. We need more of this intimacy and harmony, this knowledge of how to exist along side different human beings. I like share with students that they can learn how to grow and be "in tune" with their surroundings and fellow human beings through learning music.

My 12 year old daughter and I love Sara. Apart from her obvious musical talent she is a gifted teacher who is also knowlegeable about middle school music curriculum, requirements and opportunities. She's super organized (including emailing me about useful resources) and punctual. My daughter seems more enthusiastic about practicing now and Sara's gentle praise has made her more confident.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
