I put emphasis in acquiring a desired set of skills must not tarnish one's love for music. Saying that, I expect my students to complete the assignments given and work hard to advance their understanding and abilities as musicians. I endeavor to seek and consider new ideas and strategies to broaden my perspectives and understandings that are beneficial to teaching a student. I also reflect upon my teaching methods from time to time with feedback and insight from others in a manner that leads to improved performance and development of skills to use a variety of methods and exercises in order to become a better instructor. For beginning students, I typically start them with learning the notes, staff, beats, etc. Once the student has mastered those abilities, I begin to introduce playing "by ear" as I like to call it. This process involves the student choosing the song and learning how to play it solely by listening to it and figuring out the chords. If the student is looking to fulfill a career or perform at a competition as a piano player, then I also take the time to focus on the best practices to get them up to par with what they need for the career/competition. I personally believe in going as per the pace of the student. A progressive pace is important as well as a balance of not moving too quickly or too slowly for the students. Having fun learning music is also important to me. I like to encourage students to practice and I also implement ways to assist with making practice time more fun. The goal of music is for the student to enjoy what they are learning so that they will continue their lessons and look forward to lessons, not to feel high pressure and turn away from music altogether. Though I have strongly sharpened my skills and can adapt to almost any learning style, I continue to research and experiment and find different ways to adapt to my students. My love for music and my desire to see students succeed creates an infinite amount of patience and understanding within the context of our lessons. I can empathize with enjoyment for learning as well as frustration in failure. This enables me to share the solutions that I've found to the mistakes I've made over the years with my students so that they develop good habits from the beginning. Read More

For beginning students with instruments, I like to use the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and piano, I like to use Alfred's Basic Piano Course Lesson Book and for voice I use FULL VOICE Workbook. I know each student is different and prepared to adjust in any way to meet the student's need. I like to start out the the fundamentals of hand placements, posture, how to sit or stand, what the notes are, etc. Read More
