With an appropriate printed resource, and audio recordings to listen to, they are equipped with the materials for self-study from the start. Depending on the instrument and skill levels of the student I have different methods. For guitarists I typically like to start by learning techniques and building strength in their fingers before we move into theoretical concepts. For pianists I begin with technique but with also teaching them the musical staff and getting them started with reading music. Ultimately my method depends on the individual needs of the student. I joined school band playing drums at age 9. I started my private lessons with my mentor at age 11. I was in hight school concert, marching, and jazz bands. I won awards in jazz band.
