I encourage learning about the history and the literature of the instrument as this will help with the performance and interpretation of music. I also encourage the learning of theory, depending on the instrument, it can be very crucial. While this may sound like a lot, I make it so that all of this learning is not overwhelming. Making sure that the student is having fun, learning and achieving their musical goals is most important. I understand that each student progresses at their own pace and has diffrent goals and desires. While there are certian excersises that everyone needs to work on, solos and concert pieces are what students are drawn to. I graduated from the University of North Texas with my BM (bachelor of music) in flute performance, and from Stony Brook University with my MM (master of music) in flute performance.
