For Piano, I use several method books, including the Thompson Method, Shaum, Alfred, and Bastien. For Guitar I use Hal Leanard, Mel Bay, and several others. I also use interactive software of various kinds. And for Jazz, Blues and Rock improvisation, I use Band in a Box to provide backing tracks for the purpose of practicing improv over chord progressions. Band in a Box allows the student to simulate the experience of playing with a band in various styles and genres, with the possibility of change the chord progression and also changing the key and tempo. I began taking guitar lessons at the age of thirteen and continued for about two years before teaching myself the rest. My styes of playing range from folk-style fingerpicking (see video) to rock 'n roll, blues jazz, and Broadway. I began teaching private music lessons while in High School. My first guitar student went on to pursue a degree in Guitar Performance at Redlands University and is launching a career as a fulltime musician. Read More

I am a classically trained singer with a Master's Degree in Vocal Performance who lives, performs, and teaches in New Orleans. I frequently perform professionally in several genres of music, including opera, jazz, musical theatre, and pop. I also have several years of experience teaching in all of these genres. I sing with the New Orleans Opera and St. Cecilia's Asylum Chorus, in addition to fronting my jazz band, the Melanie Gardner Quintet, which performs regularly on Frenchmen Street and around the city.
