I've performed in several orchestras at the college level and competed in a variety of fiddle contests throughout the state of Texas, most recently the Fiddler's Frolics in Hallettsville, Texas. I have been a volunteer after-school violin instructor in the Houston Independent School District (Roosevelt Elementary, Gallegos Elementary, and Martinez Elementary) and local Jewish community centers. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. For beginners, I typically start with Mayon Cole's EZ Keys for younger children (age 4.5 to 5), and I use manehune (age 6) or level one (age 7-10) or above for elementary school age children. Once the student has progressed and gain confidence in sight reading and rhythm/counting, I will then supplement the curriculum with solo repertoires from other piano curriculum such as Fabor/Fabor or Alfred series (Little Mozart). My methods are specific for age and advancement. For younger and/or beginner level students I work mostly on ear training. This includes the ability to match pitch, sing a scale in different keys, sing different intervals in different keys, sight-read and rhythm.
