I have been playing violin for 40 years since I started at the age of 6. I minored in music education and trained under members of the United States Marine Band and National Symphony Orchestra. I currently play in the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra. I used to play in community orchestras during high school and college levels. Learning that each student has their own pace at learning an instrument is also very important on both sides tof the teacher and student, so using whatever to help a student grasp how to play is key. My cello instruction is separated by levels and books. Level 0-1 is in Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books 1 and 2. Level 1-2 is Rick Mooney's Position Pieces Book 1, as well as sheet music and books outside of that method book. Level 2-3 is Rick Mooney's Position Pieces Book 2 and sheet music, and 3+ will be Rick Mooney's Thumb Position books.
