For younger students who are just starting out, I start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements seeing as that is the book that most public schools use when teaching young, aspiring students an instrument. As the student becomes more proficient, I will begin slowly introducing material of various styles to allow the student to explore their interests. For adults, I try to find what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly so the student can learn what they want to learn, as well as for them to have a good time no matter what their ability level is. For any beginning student, I make it a thing to always teach by ear as well as by sheet music. I find it equally important to be able to hear the notes that one can play on their instrument just like they can see the notes they can play in the process. For young children, I usually choose teaching books that are more fun and give them a basic start with understanding musical symbols by performing tasks in their books. Once students begin to understand how to read and play, I start to introduce the next level of material for them. Hello! I'm Charley, a professional musician, songwriter and educator currently based in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
