The approach, overall, is to drive toward the student's goal. When someone wants to learn how to play an instrument well enough to play in a band or orchestra, I usually consider two needs - playing music and interpreting written music. These are basic parts of education, literally easy to define by achieving pages in etude books. Along with the guided listening, we would also start with fundamental musical skills. For any instrument, this would include scales and modes, time, and technique, and for saxophone this would also include sound production. I'm primarily a jazz musician, so my lessons would also include developing the ability to improvise. Improvisation doesn't necessarily have to happen in a jazz context, but that's how I would be teaching it. I would have them start working on solo transcriptions (ear training!) because I believe thats the best way to learn how to improvise. Read More

90% of being a good saxophonist is the responsibility of the student, and 10% is on the teacher. Even though a student should work hard to improve, I recognize that my 10% is extremely vital. Since my scheduled lesson with a student only represents a fraction of the time they play their horn, I keep it fun, upbeat, and encouraging.
