A very important aspect to my enjoyment of all of these pursuits is the degree to which they actually connect and overlap with many other topics and disciplines- science, mathematics, visual art, language and sociology all intersect with music at one point or another. I believe that all students deserve to have a relationship with music. I am currently a Junior at Bradley University and am studying music education. Since 2009 I have participated in numerous musicals, operas, and ensembles and have had many leadership and teaching roles within these experiences such as directing, choreographing, and teaching music, as well as coordinating schedules and communicating with cast/ensemble members, faculty, and parents. Teaching is something I have always felt passionately about. I first started teaching at the age of 14, teaching martial arts to young kids nearly every day at my stepfather’s martial arts school. As I grew up and began taking music more seriously, teaching remained an important part of my life: as clarinet section leader in the Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band in Hawaii, I was responsible for administering weekly lessons to other clarinet players in the band, and I also worked with several school music programs in Hawaii, developing and leading masterclasses for K-12 students.
