I began my musical career playing clarinet and saxophone for the Marine Forces Pacific Band in Honolulu, Hawaii. While serving, I was the concertmaster, clarinet section leader, and leader of the woodwind quintet for a combination of 300+ performances around the world. As a starting musician, I personally would go with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements 2000. It is a great way to start the student because the book breaks how to learn how music in appropriate steps. As someone who is in junior high leading into high school, I love to use scales, smooth air movement, flexibility for band, scale fluency, chromatic scales, improve exercise, and performing tip exercises. I am goofy kind of gal who is a kid at heart so, while I do not allow the students to goof-off during practice, I definitely encourage the children to have fun and take breaks. Learning a new skill is taxing on the brain so I do enjoy inserting some brain-breaks here and there, when necessary. I'm also a very big sticker advocate! Most children enjoy them, and I love rewarding them after completing a song we've been working on. Read More
