I see what ability level the student is at and then decide which method books would be most helpful.I will supplement with my own material when appropriate.For beginning students who are younger,I like Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Alfred,among others.For adults I try and find out what the student is interested in accomplishing and tailor the lessons accordingly.I like to give each student a good backing of music theory and an exposure to a wide variety of styles.I want to have each student be open to all types of music. For beginners I typically start with the Piano Adventure series, and supplement with other familiar tunes for holidays. Depending on interest, students will receive additional music. From early intermediate level I assign music from baroque, classical, romantic or modern eras, and technical exercises like Hannon or Czerny. Students are encouraged to bring music they would like to play. I customize short technical exercises to help in finger dexterity. I like to take elaborate steps with my students so that they have building blocks to continuously improve, while also ensuring them that progress is not always linear!
