Maybe they have perfect rhythm but they choose inefficient fingerings. Maybe the student can very quickly improvise their way back to the melody of a piece they are struggling to memorize. In all these cases, the student has shown their unique approach to music, and I feel it is important to acknowledge these accomplishments before offering suggestions to improve. Read More

My methods are fairly simple and straight-forward! I emphasize a good, solid basic ability to sight read and understand theory. Without a good base the rest of the building would be unstable. If I'm working with a beginner I prefer to use a mixture of Thompson and Michael Aaron to solidify the basics and branch out from there based on the students aptitudes and preferences. I like the student to always have a favorite song on the side of any educational book as well, often a Disney song or simple hymn which very frequently become their passion and recital piece! I took plenty of college level courses on education and music and eventually completed my student teaching in a middle and high school orchestra classroom. Read More

That may mean learning to co.pse originals or it may be their own expression of classics or other well known material in various genres of musician styles. Read More
