Performed at Jazz Education Network Conference 2014, Dallas TX
I am a motivated, hard-working performer and teacher. I am a very versatile musician who has studied classical, jazz, blues, rock, and many other genres. I play regularly all over North Carolina and South Carolina with a rock band and a jazz trio. I also work with musical theater groups playing in the pit orchestras. My primary instruments are the upright bass and bass guitar, but I can teach guitar and piano as well.
I began teaching just before I attended UNC Pembroke in 2010. I have experience instructing individuals as well as groups. Throughout college, I taught lessons (mostly guitar) in my own home.
For beginner students who are children, I like to teach them without method books and get them accostumed to playing the instrument by teaching them simple melodies. I try to incorporate games in order to keep the lessons fun and interesting. For adults and advanced students, I focus heavily on theory and technique. I like to teach the history of the instrument and genres as well.
I base how fast my lessons advance on how quickly the student learns and how often the student practices on his/her own. I ask my students to play their instrument every day. I believe encouragement is much more productive than criticism, so I will acknowledge a student’s accomplishments regularly to keep them motivated.
