I tend to emphasize theory as well as playing when Im teaching my students because learning music is more effective when supported by theory. Learning a musical indtrument requires a high level of concentration to learn and understand the music, and to memorize and perform it, so it can be helpful for students with other learnings or activities. Moreover the process of completing a piece is more difficult and time consuming than we think, but through this kind of practice, kids can develop their patience and discipline. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my undergraduate days. As a French Horn teacher, I teach multiple schools in China. As a piano teacher, I coached elementary and middle school students on basic techniques of playing French horn, like articulations, scales, essential etudes, and orchestral repertoire. I coached elementary students on basic piano skills, like Bayer piano introductory course, Czerny Op. 599, Op. 299, Hanon sixty exercises for the piano, Piano Adventures by Nancy and Randall Faber, John Thompson's Modern Course for the piano and Sonatina album. Of course, every student is different, and an integral part of my philosophy involves getting to know each student so that I may learn their creative preferences, strengths, and weaknessness. I do not shy away from books, I do indeed enjoy working out of the Hal Leonard collection because I appreciate the step by step structure. This may apply less to guitar, however, if the student's primary ambitions are to learn songs by Green Day or The Beatles, etc. Read More

I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. In 2004, I graduated from Hartford University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance. In 2006, I graduated from Manhattan School of Music with a Masters degree in Piano Performance. Performing all over the world has been one of the greater experiences of my life as a musician, and I've had the opportunity to play both at the Zinc Bar in New York, as well as touring the East Coast as several performances as the pianist in the Artie Shaw and Cab Calloway Orchestras. I will start my beginner piano lessons with "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" "John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course Part I." Basic music theory such as determining lines spaces (Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge F.A.C.E) and basic 1-5 fingering patterns. Depending on the level of the beginner, we could practice "Hot Cross Buns," "Mary Had a Little Lamb" "Happy Birthday" or "Ode to Joy." I will assess students based on knowledge of music theory and muscle memory/ability to play. Read More

Generally layed back low pressure lessons, but I will push a student if they let me. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. Read More
