For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the music theory basics which will always serve as a strong background to their music knowledge and overall muscle memory. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. In each lesson the student and myself work to make goals for them to accomplish every week and discuss discuss the ways they might be able to go about accomplishing the goals. Sometimes I will make audio recordings of a student to track progress. For a student to sit and really listen to the improvemnets they have made I find to be one of my best teaching tools. I meet my students where they are when they come into the studio and base the lesson on what they need that day, within an overall framework of growth. Lessons consist of some warm up exercises followed by working on a piece of music, or multiple if lessons are long enough. Exercises are given in which techniques found in the repertoire are practiced. I teach students how to read music and offer graded music theory workbooks so that their comprehension of what is on the page keeps pace with or exceeds their technical ability. Read More
