Instruments: Piano

At all levels (beginner-advanced), I teach piano performance, technique, music theory, ear training, and sight reading. My curriculum follows the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) standards, and students are strongly encouraged to take RCM examinations as they progress through each level. Although every student's piano journey will look different based on their musical goals, preferences, etc., the RCM standards provide guidelines upon which I design a personal curriculum for each student. My love for the guitar and music, in general, is something I'm eager to share. I approach teaching with enthusiasm, empathy, and creativity, creating an environment where students feel supported, encouraged, and inspired. I see teaching as more than imparting knowledge; it's about nurturing creativity, building confidence, and instilling a lifelong appreciation for music. The joy of witnessing a student's growth, not only as a musician but as an individual, is a reward that continually drives my love for teaching. Read More

Instruments: Piano Cello

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with teaching basic music theory, scales, and start with John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course for the piano students. For Cello beginning students, it's very important to have a correct playing position. Therefore, we will spend some time on knowing cello, position for both hands, and then we will start with Suzuki. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Read More

All of my singers work through the exercises by Mathilde Marchesi as they are the backbone of bel canto and good healthy singing. I encourage my vocalists to explore different styles and techniques to find the best fit for their instruments. I also teach theory and sight singing using various different methods and tools. I am a big believer in encouraging my singers to do research on the pieces they are performing. Read More

I have been teaching private lessons for about 2 years, both for a company and privately. These lessons include beginner piano, voice, and violin. In my music therapy internship I have also had the experience of teaching adaptive piano, guitar, and ukulele lessons. Finally, while I am not yet board certified and cannot offer music therapy until next school year, I have over 1,000 hours of music therapy clinical experience in which I use musical activities to help clients achieve non-musical goals in the areas of cognition, emotion, physical abilities, communication, social skills and academics. Hi! My name is Ashley and I am passionate about teaching music! Growing up, I was big into Musical Theatre, but I also had an older brother who really got me into rock music. I made my professional theatre debut in the 7th grade, and my career took off from there! I pursued a degree in Musical Theatre, and went on to "pound the pavement" in New York City, as they say, working in various facets and degrees of the musical theatre industry. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
It takes a lot of focus and discipline. I would make sure that practice time is set aside and written into a schedule. Don’t spend too much time focusing on things you aren’t succeeding at but go back to a simpler form that you have already mastered and build on that area. For example, if you are having trouble with a C Major scale in piano, you can go back to a five finger pattern by breaking the scale down into those first five notes (C, D, E, F & G). Once you have mastered this, you can add on A, B, & C.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I had quite a few teachers who inspired me to do music. My mother, first of all, took me a church choir rehearsal at age four or five, and it was love at first sound! My grandfather listened to big band music & songs that sounded like Frank Sinatra. And he was always listening to tapes and records as far back as I can remember. My earliest music teacher was back in kindergarten. Having a music class at that age was so influential for me. My introduction to instruments was in fifth grade when I started taking clarinet lessons. This was when I really started to pick up on music notation/reading music. And although, I've been singing my whole life, I didn't quite learn how to properly sing until my freshman year of high school. I worked incredibly hard for three years so that I could eventually join the elite chorale, which I made my senior year. I would have to say my high school choir director had the biggest influence on me in terms of really studying and pursuing music.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
My music degree is in vocal performance with an additional focus on piano. I chose vocal performance because I have always been singing and this is the instrument that has always come the most naturally for me. I love singing and it just made sense. After a couple of years I chose to add piano lessons because this was another instrument I seemed to pick up quickly and enjoyed playing. I had a goal to be able to sing and accompany myself on piano simultaneously and I was able to reach that goal in time to perform a piece at my recital.
