Throughout the course of my collegiate career, the main method/approach to singing that I have been taught and teach to my own students as well, is that of relying on proper air/breath support to do the "heavy lifting" in singing- NOT putting any stress or tension on your vocal chords! I do insist that each student practice one to two hours a day based on what they are taught. This includes, but is not limited to finger exercises, drills, posture and any thing that will make playing better for them. First and foremost my method of teaching are nearly based upon my own teachers teaching style, which was using a small material to teach everything on it. Example, I would take a small little line or phrase of music, I would teach them the construct of rhythm, time, tempo, the style, articulation, and then apply the exercises or fudamentals around learning how to play the line properly. My preferred method for very young students has been the Suzuki method, as I believe a well trained ear continues to be our best musical learning tool later in life as well. When students progress to reading, the full line of Suzuki books can of course be utilized, but it is very advisable to incorporate additional materials and techniques.
