My goal as a teacher is to provide a safe space for creativity in teaching my students how they can thrive in their music aspirations, how to divide hard work and fun and motivating them and connecting their interests into one passion: creating beautiful music. The big part of of my teaching style is sight-reading (reading and playing new music on the spot) and playing chamber music (on each lessons we will play duets). Read More

I began playing drums in 1994. In 1999, I joined my first band, which was blues/funk/rock. We had a ton of fun, recorded two albums in the studio, won a bunch of contests, played Hollywood and countless local gigs. Since then, I have recorded two more albums with various bands and have massive amounts of stage time as part of a live group. During that time, I have taught a few random people how to play or how to improve. Read More

Music has been an integral part of my life since I was old enough to learn how to turn on the radio. While through the years I have developed an appreciation for all styles of music, my personal playing style revolves around classical, pop, rock, jazz, and blue-grass. I have played in educational and amateur groups since college and started playing professionally about 20 years ago. I feel that the final step in any musician's development is to learn to play in a group. Read More

For beginner students, I use the Piano Adventure series, and for adults, I utilize Alfred or Adventure Adult books. Intermediate and advanced level students mainly work with individual books dedicated to composers from different eras. Despite having excellent resources, I always strive to personalize the approach and book selection according to each student's needs using a one-on-one customized approach to teaching. I create a yearly plan for each student I receive, which includes foundational piano lessons, preparation for competitions, and special pieces for the Christmas season. Read More

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Management, which is a music business degree focused on artist/band management. I chose this degree because I wanted to be practical about a career in music. At the time, I was nowhere near ready to be a professional player, and let's be honest, those jobs are difficult to get and maintain. With my degree, I took a mix of music, business, and law classes. I also had an internship at the now-defunct EMI Records, who ended up hiring me full-time when I graduated. Now, while I still teach when the opportunity comes, my main job is with Netflix, on their soundtracks team.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
The personal accomplishment I am most proud of is the publishing of my own drum book by the world's premier music publishing company, Hudson Music. The book is called Paradiddlemania! and it was an encouragement to know that I have something to contribute to our musical culture. I'm also proud of my earliest students, who after some 20 years, are now teachers and players themselves.
When will I start to see results?
I always strive to have brand-new students making music by the end of the first lesson. The level will depend on the student, but often, by the end of the first lesson, we could be playing a drumbeat, mimicking rhythms, counting, clapping in rhythm, or playing hand patterns. The wonderful thing about drums is that there isn't much difficulty in producing a sound (like trumpet, flute, or clarinet). So, in short order, I can show you how to hold the sticks properly, give you hand patterns to work on, have you listening to music in a new way, or even play along to your first song.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Consistent high-quality practice is always more beneficial than inconsistent high-quantity practice. I believe that a student can have a highly effective 20 - 30-minute practice session if they are working on a regular schedule and are remaining focused on their goals. Often, with players who practice for longer, time is wasted because they are focusing on the parts they can already play. Or they may experience setbacks because they try to accomplish too much in a single session; either suffering from fatigue or biting off more than they can chew. In this way, practicing can be a little bit like brushing teeth - twice every day for a few minutes is much more productive than brushing for an hour once a week. To help keep students on track, I recommend journaling. At the end of each session, the student should journal what they worked on and for how long. The student should also note any part of the practice that was difficult or needed work. At the next session, the student reviews the previous session, choosing goals for the day by reading their notes and focusing on the things that were difficult to do the day before. In this way, the students' practice sessions can remain focused and productive, and the student can move more regularly onto new material.
