I started playing piano since I was about 4 years old and I've been teaching since the summer of 2017. I passed the ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory exam in 2012 and the ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Performance exam in 2016. I also won several music scholarships during high school. I am a very hands-on teacher. We do lots of improvisation and call and response games and sometimes I turn on a record or even bring a guitar to jam with the student. Playing drums is a very visceral, tactile excersize, and I often tell students, "That right there,that is how it's supposed to sound! Memorize that feeling and try to recreate it everytime." For young learners, I teach using Nancy and Randal Faber's Piano Adventures. For adults, I use the all-in-one Faber adult book. However, as early as possible, I like to get outside of the book and get a student learning a song they love. When it comes to learning piano (especially in the beginning), fun is a critical ingredient for success. In my lessons, I work with students through a lesson book, on repertoire they are interested outside the lesson book, on technique, music theory, and anything a student is interested in or curious about. My main focus is trying to teach students HOW to learn music, so that they can eventually create their own methodology based on what works best for them. I have eight years of experience teaching private lessons, so I understand how to craft a curriculum to an individual's needs.
