I like to start by asking about a student about their prior experience (if any), interests and goals on their instrument. With my students, I generally start by tackling basics like healthy breathing and posture, producing good tone, note-reading, and rhythm. Depending on students interests, we may then gradually incorporate more advanced techniques such as playing by ear, learning longer, more complex classical or jazz pieces, music theory, and improvisation. I have played the guitar my entire life and never lost my love for it (even when I tried!). I have a bachelor’s degree in guitar from Wichita State University where I studied with jazz guitar legend Jerry Hahn (Rolling Stone magazine called him one of the top 3 jazz guitarists in the world). After going through that, with some other material on the side, such as performance pieces, etc, they would progress to the Arban book (at around high school age for the student who began in sixth grade, as I did). With my teaching style, I prefer to work on what the student has an interest in if they are old enough to know. There is no better feeling than to work with a student who is enjoying the study of the current material. I also enjoy teaching beginning composition and bringing out the music from within. For all students I use a combination of Alexander Technique, Lovetri Somatic Voice Work, and Kodaly Method. I believe singing is a full body experience and focus on maintaining a healthy body and mind. My lessons are student led. At the first lesson I will ask questions about the students goals and cater the lessons to the individuals needs and desires. I began teaching as a supervised and mentored Guided Practice Teacher, helping students learn to practice and become their own teacher. After a few years of that, I was deemed "Ready To Teach" by my supervisors and mentors.
