I usually speak to the student about the music they have been listening to and we compare what they've been listening to what they've been learning. Next we review the last lesson and then we work on songs or spend a little time improvising in a way that combines what they're hearing in the music they are currently listening to and their past lessons along with new information. For beginning students, I typically start with materials from Mel Bay or Hal Leonard. Once a student has completed this, I begin to offer materials that are more specific to the musical genre that they have stated interest in. As a student progresses, I work to expose them to a variety of techniques with a focus on helping them to develop their own unique voice on their instrument. My hope is that, during this process, students would come to view growing in their musical gifts as an enjoyable and fulfilling process that continues throughout their life. Read More

 Drawing upon my education and experiences as both performer and teacher, I strive to relate my musical background to my students' learning experiences and progress. As each student comes with his or her individual musical wants and interests, student lessons are designed to meet these needs of a particular student. I have young students of ages 5 to 14 as well as students of upper ages. I love seeing a student succeed, but what I love more than that is seeing that the student understands it is their effort that has resulted in their success. It is hard to put in the practice time sometimes, and it is hard to always feel like you're progressing, so while I may need to sometimes guide a student into better choices (whether fingerings on the piano, or picking patterns on a guitar or banjo), I will always try to find some aspect of their current ability to compliment.
