For beginning students who are children, I start with Rubank's Elementary Method book.  This will provide the student with the basic fundementals.  I will then introduce the student to a variety of solo repertoire for his or her instrument. When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. With adult musicians, I let them guide me to their area of interest, and I capitalize on that to guide them to better musicianship, no matter what their skill level may be. Read More

During both my doctoral and masters degrees, I worked as a Teaching Assistant in the flute studio. Along with teaching private lessons to undergraduate students, I have experience leading studio classes/group lessons, technique/scale classes, and I designed a semester-long class titled, Teaching Technique through Repertoire, which I later presented as part of a pedagogy project. For beginner students, I try to get them to learn a song by the first lesson.  Eventually, I start them off by focusing on technique (learning notes and scales), tone development, etudes, and repertoire.  Efficiency of effort in the fingers, usage of air, and holding of the body in order to produce a beautiful sound is a top priority.  I believe the connection between the mind and body is very important, and you will find me often asking questions to engage the students in being aware of what they are doing as they are playing.
