As a teacher, I have learned the last 4 years that you can't expect a student to just know something right away. It takes time, and students have to take it at their own pace. Sometimes, you have to differentiate instruction often, until the student starts to understand something. I also spend a lot of time developing proper technique with my students, to ensure that my students do not form bad habits that limit their improvement.
