As section leader in my band, I went to the local middle school to help their clarinet players learn and improve on a 1 on 1 basis. I am a southern California retired music teacher. I graduated with a double major in music from South Dakota State University. I taught instrumental music in public and private schools for the last 36 years. I have also owned and operated my own piano studio. I am married and have three boys. I put a large emphasis both on sight-reading and learning to play by ear; I believe these are the most important two skills any musician can have, whether he be an amateur, professional, or somewhere in between (yes, there's an in-between!). I like to focus on whatever a student has coming up for an audition or a solo & ensemble festival. If I can help players have a great experience soloing in public or help them win an audition to play with a great band (and I have a very good track record with my students winning auditions), they'll be more motivated. I started teaching since high school marching band when I became the clarinet section leader. I taught marching fundamentals, and would rehearse the music with my section. Since the latter half of my undergrad in college, I would run clarinet sectionals for wind ensembles and symphony orchestras.
