I like my students to bring a small notebook, so that they may write their homework down, and any practice assignments. I expect my students to keep a practice log of how much time they practice per week, in between lessons. I always insist that setting goals and expectations for them, is very important, as well as keeping track of whether they themselves are staying on task. I try and incorporate different ways of practicing or playing music, so that even practicing turns into being fun and exciting and doesn't feel like a chore. Read More

The methods that I choose to use with my students depends on what they want to learn. Some students want to just play classical music, some pop, some jazz, some marching band, etc. Therefore I do not use the same teaching methods for all students. With that being said, I do make certain that all of my srudents understand the basic elements of music, i.e., time and key signatures, note values, melody, rhythm, harmony, pitch, intonation (if a wind instrument), form, theme and variation, etc. Read More

I compose music with environmental intentions in mind. As a performer who has received training in the European symphonic tradition, I have studied music by composers who are no longer alive and also by composers who are still living today. I have studied the music in the American Jazz tradition as well as music by popular composers from the past 40 years. These three styles have been explored, and this is one medium in which I compose: with a name. Read More

The true role of a teacher is to open the door for a student to discover things on their own. Because every student has different ways of learning different things, a teacher must be able to guide a student through the process and find what works the best for them. Also, I am more interested in engaging a student in the spirit and emotion of music, rather than just the technical aspect of playing an instrument. Read More
