My methods are geared toward the individual. Oftentimes I might start with a methods book for a beginner, but supplement it with musical choices by the individual. In selecting these choices, I find ways to simplify the music so that the student is able to be able to play it. My method is also based on questions that the student might ask. So while we will have an approach that is organized and structured, I find that addressing seemingly unrelated musical questions, can actually be incorporated into the tasks at hand. Read More

Typically I break my lessons into two parts; half dedicated to learning songs, and the other half dedicated to learning chords. For songs I'll start out with very basic melody songs (beginners), eventually working in power chords and tackling classic rock favorites, and finally incorporating chords/barre chords/soloing. If the student is interested in playing a particular style of music my goal is to eventually focus on that style in our lessons. Read More

For beginning students I like to get them to have proper technique when it comes to the right and left hand placement on the bass. I also like them to get familiar with a sense of time so I use a metronome and teach them about how the beat works along with playing the notes on the bass. For intermediate students I gauge their knowledge of music theory such as scales and arpeggios and work on those along with tackling songs that they might want to play. Read More

Most of my professional experience has been with the Marine Corps Music Program for 15 years. I also grew up with private piano lessons, and continued band and show choir throughout high school.  Before my career with the Marine Corps Band, I also performed professionally around northern Ohio as a keyboardist and drummer in Top 40 and Rock bands for 3 years.
