I teach harmony, rhythm, technique, melody, and basic sight reading by a two fold approach. First is to really feel into the music. This means learning to listen deeply with curiosity, intention, respect, and joy bringing the meaning of play into every aspect of learning. The second part is to begin with the basics of music theory by grounding fully into the fundamentals. For beginning students, I typically start with teaching basic healthy singing techniques, such as vocalizing and healthy posture while singing. This includes instruction of vocal and breathing mechanics. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire selection guidance, performance coaching, and song interpretation and stylistic traits of a variety of genres. Outside of lessons I typically do ask that you practice a minimum of 5 times per week for 15-20 minutes using practice exercises that we learn in lessons so that you will continue to improve vocal technique. I am an experienced music teacher with a background in rock, blues, and folk music. As a self-taught guitarist, drummer, and harmonica player, I have years of experience both teaching and performing music. After studying classical guitar, voice, and music education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, I graduated from Appalachian State university with a master's in guitar performance in August of 2022.
