For beginning students I really tried to start with some basic music theory example for the notes of the piano I would have them get one of the learning time piano books and have them fill in each note of where they correlate. For example if I were to teach someone again the C major scale. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with what they feel most comfortable and provide them with lots of encouragement. I also teach them basics to Music Theory, such as note names and how to read music. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce more advanced repertoire as they gain confidence in their ability.
