After this initial evaluation, I develop a personalized plan which addresses healthy vocal production and practice techniques which address the needs of the student. For piano, I like to begin with fundamentals such as five finger exercises and musical literacy teachings to ensure growth of musical understanding as well as proper technique. I have had great success using the Faber and Faber book series, as this gets students in the music quickly. From there, there is so much solo repertoire to explore! Voice: In voice lessons we do not use books which allows me to fully customize lessons to the individual students needs and wants. I teach different methods of breathing, including low costal breathing and we focus on posture, sound placement, among many other fun skills. I studied piano and violin during elementary, middle and high school, playing with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra in the 70's. In college I pursued voice and violin and studied music theory, history of opera, orchestra, chorus. I was interested in acting and musical theatre and did further studies at MacPhail School of Music. (Minneapolis, Minnesota). I performed in night clubs, for weddings, churches and conferences over the years. Eventually, I sang and wrote songs on guitar and performed for many New Thought churches from 1980s - 2000's. My experience teaching started in college. I was lucky enough to be elected the Music Director of an all male a cappella group at Missouri State and much of my time was spent teaching vocal techniques, musicianship, and arranging to the group as well as individually. At this time, I was also the tenor section leader for the Missouri State Concert Chorale under the direction of Dr. Guy Webb. After college, I pursued a teaching career in Birmingham, AL where I taught private voice and piano lessons to 30-40 students a week as well as coaching group classes and rock bands for competition.
