As a music education major I spent a lot of time learning pedagogy, assessment, and evaluation. I've written dozens of lesson plans including those for students with special needs. For students who are already in an instrumental program through school, I will start with whatever method book they are using at school, and branch off from there. Depending on the instrument, I will bring in another method book specific to that instrument book and we will also use some sort of etude book. I use a variety of methods and techniques. I have training in the Suzuki Method, as well as more traditional methods of violin instruction. In my lessons knowing scales and arpeggios will be important. I also teach about keys and time signatures early on. Some students need structure, some need to be encouraged and some just need someone to help them polish their skills.
