My teaching style is to MAKE IT FUN. No punishment. I encourage my students to play or sing whatever they want with my help for the structure. For example: I'm teaching a student to date music theory. At one point 10 years ago when I was teaching a student theory, she completely shut down and wanted no longer to take piano lessons because of the difficulty of it. I started teaching guitar lessons in 1999 (20 years this year!) Since those days I've gotten two degrees and taught at colleges, and private institutions, as well as high school and middle schools. I've found that combining textbook music instruction along with learning to play some of the music the student is listening to keeps them growing and engaged. Although while at SMU my focus was mainly on orchestral playing and classical techniques, I am equally comfortable playing jazz and commercial styles, and honestly probably play those styles just as much as I do orchestral work now. For beginner students, I often use the Essential Elements series, or a similar book. Work on fundamentals should be regular. Some of the books I like to use for this are: Clarke, Schlossberg, Bai Lin, Irons, Stamp, and more. Solos and etude books are important to work out of as well. Early etude books include Getchell and Small, and later etude books include Bousquet, Longinotti, Brandt, and Charlier.
