My teaching style is based on each student's needs. Some students like to learn at a fast pace and others like to go slower. I listen carefully and ask questions, basing instruction on what creates success. My approach is to make learning fun. I began playing trumpet in 5th grade. I enjoyed band throughout high school and decided to become a music teacher. I joined the Army National Guard band in Denver, Colorado and remained a part-time musician in three National Guard bands throughout my 36-year career. My last year was spent leading a ceremonial band in a record number of performances in Iraq. I've taught band for 23 years, working with students from grades 5 through 12. Read More

For beginning students, I generally start with the Accent on Achievment book series and spend the first few lessons assessing and addressing the important fundamentals of the students' particular instrument. After working out of the book for an apropriate amount of time, I introduce solo repertiore from both pop and classical genres. Additionally, I like students to work on solos with piano accompaniment, although I don't require it. I am also a big fan of using duets to build listening skills and fluidity (and most students think duets are fun!). For piano lessons, I have experience with a variety of methods; each has its strengths and weaknesses.
