Every student is different, so my teaching approach is rarely identical from student to student. Technical training progresses as a student develops motivation through his or her practice habits. I try to encourage practice through journal entry and self-accountability. I also try to make a student's home practice a little more exciting by setting goals and explaining what will be accomplished through achieving these short-term goals. For each lesson, I begin with a 5 to 10 minute warmup before moving on to the student's assigned music.  I like to alternate between actual performance/practicing, and teaching concepts including music theory.  I also wrap-up every lesson by spending 5 minutes in review with the student, going over what they need to practice in the coming week ahead. For beginner students who are children, I usually start with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has advanced to where I can see that they have a good grasp of the fundamentals of the instrument, that is typically when I begin to introduce solo repertoire and supplement with my own material.
