Students will likely begin in a method book of some form, and eventually will use supplementary material as needed. The method books for Younger students typically consists of 3 or more levels depending on their skill, while the method books for older students provide a good outline of the technique for the instrument. I will always start by assisting the Students ability and music knowledge, with some basic exercises and questions to warm up. I will spend the majority of the lesson introducing scales and melodies that the child can play in and out of lessons. I usually include improvisation exercises to allow the Student to be creative and to see what style they lean towards when they play, which in turn gives me insight into what the child enjoys and can teach them more around their creative style.
