I always take my students interests into account that is appropriate for their voice while solidifying good technique. However, it is equally important to be a good listener. I put a major emphasis on aural skill improvement because sight-reading using solfge syllables and rhythm exercises will bring students to the next step in their musicianship and make them more independent learners. Ideally, I prefer to work with younger children because it is at this stage in life that they are most musically receptive; I believe it is important for a budding musician to love their craft and - regardless of age, technical skill can only take one so far in the arts.
